"At first disjointed and a bit diffuse, the 1989 Rauzan-Segla has turned itself around in bottle and is now an outstanding effort. The very forward nose of black fruits intermixed with Provencal herbs, underbrush, licorice, and new oak is followed by a medium to full-bodied wine with a roasted ripeness, silky tannins, and a long, lusty finish. The wine is showing exceptionally well and seems destined to drink, at least at this level of quality, for another decade. Anticipated maturity: Now-2012. Last tasted, 3/02."
"Wonderfully balanced and harmonious '89. Inky-ruby color, and a brick-red edge. Intense aromas of berries, spices and licorice. Full-bodied and velvety, with lovely ripe fruit and a long, caressing finish.--1989 Bordeaux horizontal. Best after 2001. _JS"
